VISION - VIBRATION WORKSHOPS

Blackout Arts designed a series of workshops for Deaf participants in 2004, as part of the Arts in Partnership initiative between Bristol Community Festival and Orange, supported by Arts and Business. The first workshop took place as part of the Vision-Sign Deaf Film Festival that year.

With a practical emphasis the classes explored some of the techniques for producing and combining different kinds of image and sound in a performance context (from DJing and VJing to sound recording, filming and editing images for projection).

The success of these workshops led to the development of a relationship between Blackout and Deaf Rave - an organisation run by Deaf people, promoting nightclub based events, creating new opportunities for Deaf performers (DJs, MCs, dancers and comedians) and an unparalleled social environment for the UK's Deaf communities.

Blackout received extended investment from Arts & Business to enable the training of two Deaf people in advanced VJ skills. The final VJ workshops took place on 17 and 18 June with the conclusion of the project being a Deaf Rave set at Blackout, Ashton Court Festival 2004, featuring visuals by Martin Elston and Bim Adjani the two newly trained Deaf VJs.
