The original and most notorious cult film of all time is scored by rather magical art house electronix outfit Bronnt Industries Kapital (Static Caravan/Warp) for a one off performance in a beautifully faded gothic cathedral. Three elements coming together to forge an unforgettable experience. Bronnt Industries Kapital are the duo of Guy Bartell and Nick Talbot (aka WARP's Gravenhurst, who just released a new album to his best reviews yet). Expanding to a small ensemble for this performance, their soundtrack matches Christensen's extraordinary depiction of historical witchcraft with a totally unique, otherworldly and constantly shifting musical landscape ranging from chilling electrical/concrete passages to joyous electro-acoustic ensemble pieces.
A truly stunning piece of cinema history, Häxan (1922, dir. Benjamin Christensen, Swedish/Danish) is fusion film using dramatisation, documentary, animation about witchcraft and superstition based on the infamous medieval book, Malleus Maleficarum, regarded as the 'bible' of the Inquisition's witch hunts. The film features a sinister, OTT and stunning depictions of grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, baby sacrifices and an unforgettable depiction of a satanic sabbath. Met with outrage on its release, it has since been reappraised as a classic and gained a wider audience.
The evening is made even more choral and atmospheric by the special guest
Grouper, all the way from the Portland, USA (surely Bristol twin-music-city).
She will conjure ethereal song circles to fill the void left by God.
