The event brings together an international collective of vanguard artists, musicians, animators and digital masters, Future of Sound / Future of Light nationwide tour unveils cutting edge immersive audio visual innovations at Arnolfini, Bristol, April 25, hosted by Martyn Ware, electronic pioneer and founder of Human League / Heaven 17.
Toy technology, harnessing the sound of organic material, interactive light shows, mapping, field recording presented in 3D sound, magical pianos, talks, discussions and installations all get featured.
Part presentation, part performance, and part audience interaction –the show explores the future of experiential art and sound utilising a ground breaking 3D surround sound system.
Produced by Future of Sound, Illustrious, Cybersonica.
From the man who created a device converting starlight into music – Brian Duffy presents Modified Toy Orchestra. Duffy conducts a real time orchestra which taps into the latent potential of discarded technology by using abandoned electronic children’s toys to create sophisticated electro pop, industrial and abstract soundscapes. MTO are currently working on their second album, due for release this autumn, and will be making their first UK appearance at Arnolfini the following their inaugural tour of China.
Featuring a rare alchemy of award-winning musicians, animators and programmers The Sancho Plan create fantastical worlds of adventure in which animated musical characters are triggered in real time by a variety of electronic musical instruments. Intended as narrative stories as much as musical and visual performances, their shows have featured in clubs and festivals around the world from Big Chill (UK) to Burning Man (USA).
Tilly Automatic (aka Sarah Nicolls) is a member of Warp Records’ trio Alexander’s Annexe, who have performed at Transmedial Festival (Berlin) and Sonar (Barcelona). For Future of Sound Nicholls will be setting the piano against electronic music by using motors inside the piano to harness electronic sound triggered, in true magicians style, by Nicolls waving an old-fashioned top hat.
Owl Project will be making their Bristol debut and introducing the m-Log; the latest development in OP technology; a USB powered controller interface made out of wood that fits in the palm of the hand - as well as other distinctive sculptural instruments such as iLogs and Log1Ks and the notorious Stump.
Bristol based Touch Records sound artist Simon Whetham performs compositions hewn from sound captured from around the world - from Iceland’s glaciers to Brazil’s rainforests. A special commission using the 3D soundsystem.
In the dark studio will be a special performance entitled CHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHC
(Ch/3+4=H¾c) by Rod Maclachlan (Blackout Arts) and
Vi. Thermally distorted light creates a hallucinatory plain
of shimmering ripples. The singing of live crickets fills ones head. They
sing heat; (Ch)= No. of chirps in 25sec, (H¾c)= heat in degrees C. Sonic sculptor
V.I will communicate with the
CHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHC at set times. Rod has shown work at Flatpack Festival, Late
at Tate Britain, Mare St Biennale and recently concocted the visual magic
for the Murcof /BCN 216 Oceano tour. He is one third of Blackout Arts.
Proud to present an afternoon practical workshop by Steve Symons
(Owl Project) introducing the muio interface - a USB powered hardware
device for sensing and controlling real world data using software such as
Pure Data and MaxMSP
Also featuring explorations into the future of sound and light via Artist
Talks and Q&A - chaired by Cyberonica’s Lewis Sykes. Participating
artists are Anthony Rowe (squidsoup), Kathy Hinde,
and Brian Duffy (Modified Toy Orchestra).
As part of the event, Arnolfini’s foyer and gallery will feature installations by Kathy Hinde, squidsoup and more to be confirmed.
