ASHTON COURT MENU: intro | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002
Blackout Sound Cinema is a well established event at Bristol's Cube Microplex, formalising the notion of 'soundtracks to imaginary films' by presenting soundtracks performed by musicians, DJs or from CD to a cinema auditorium in total darkness. It is a very visual experience where impressions come from the imagination rather than projected light.
This event in four parts is curated by composer/sound artist John Levack Drever and brings the 'cinema of the ear' to the Blackout festival space, exploring soundscape compositions and recorded acoustic ecologies from a series of different international locations.
LOCATION 1 (live performance)
John Levack-Drever: Phonographies of Exeter
See main event schedule for more information
LOCATION 2
Yannick Dauby: noophonie (2000)
The Greek root 'noos', popularised by Theillard de Chardin, refers to any
piece of matter that contains a little part of conscience.
LOCATION 3
Jose Luis Carles: Vuelta A Valencia (2001)
The soundscape titled Vuelta A Valencia (Return To Valencia) attempts to present
in a pragmatic fashion urban acoustic material which has been submitted to
analysis at the spectral and structural level, in search of an emphasis on
the sounding qualities of the ambiences recorded.

LOCATION 4
Werner Cee : Repercusion (1998)
The piece uses exclusive recordings made in Spring 1998 in Havana and the
Cuban hinterland. The subject of this composition is the notion of "reflections,
repercussions". Cuban reality is located somewhere between times, dreams
long-ended still create translucent visions, the present appears to be the
echo of the past, a memory. The traveller loses track in history.

Splicing together each piece of work from the Movie-Magic 16mm scratch-animation workshop earlier in the day, this presentation shows the results of this stunningly simple but effective technique.
On the Edge of the Woods - Paul Clarke and Anna Lucas
An album/EP of audio-visual songs/lock grooves made in participation with young people in a rural landscape. Speechless moments of suspended anticipation, in which something and nothing could happen. Before or after some event, alone together, away from the group, on the edge of the woods. Anna Lucas is an artist film-maker. Her recent exhibition Bud at Spike Island was the result of her Henry Moore Fellowship residency and will be touring to Melbourne festival. Paul Clarke directs performance and multi-media company Univited Guests and lectures at Dartington College of Arts.
East European animation represents a sensational mix of the bizarre and the playful. Work by the likes of Jiri Trnka, Jan Svankmajer, Nina Shorina and Yuri Norstein represents a tradition in European animation exploring the notions of fantasy and the surreal, always as profound as it is delightfully disturbing.
Working under authoritarian, often oppressive regimes, East European animators have traditionally trodden a difficult path - fulfilling the need for their creations to represent their point of view while remaining ambiguous enough not to incur the wrath of the State. This ambiguity lends much East European animated film a distinct and compelling quality, explored across the weekend's programming through a rare selection of films from the masters of the genre. Curated by Kari Nygrd.
This epic-pathetic quest movie is a multi-layered homage to the cinematic imagination, following the protagonist, 'aware-wolf', on an allegorical journey to the nub of the humanque-condition.' Nathan Hughes is an artist/filmmaker and light-jockey, wielding a low-slung lap-top in media-mash stupagrup I am the Mighty Jungulator and in its parent creative-collective, Socket.
